A week after my hospitalization, I go home again, somewhat sobered. This sobered-up feeling is made worse one chilly November morning.

I am about to access datingdirect.co.uk, to send a couple of messages, when I notice that a bill has arrived. It's my credit-card bill. The sight of it reminds me of all those websites I have visited and paid for. Slightly reluctantly, I open the bill, and read the figure.

£550.

Wow. Normally it's about £100.

As I sit there, I assess my reactions to this sizeable figure. My reactions are mixed. Put it another way: I'm mortified. Much as I'd like to be perplexed by this, much as I'd like to be outraged, much as I'd like to be mystified as to where the money's gone, I can't. I know perfectly well where the money's gone: to dubious companies in Suriname, to the nice people in charge of Fetbot, to the accounts department over at hootermania.net.

And now the questions are kicking in. I have to ask myself: what's happened to me over the last few weeks? What is it about Net porn that got me so hooked-in contrast to ordinary porn? These are questions that have been simmering on the back burner of my mind for some time. Now they're bubbling over.

A few moments' consideration and a very strong cup of coffee gives me a quick answer. To my mind, there are three huge, obvious, and crucial differences between Net porn and old-fashioned porn, which may explain why Net porn appeals-to a dangerous degree-whereas old porn didn't.

First, much of the porn on the Net is gratis (you can pay if you insist, as I foolishly did, but you don't have to). Pretty important.

Second, there is no embarrassment in getting hold of the stuff; with the World Wide Web there is no quick furtive once-over of the top shelf at the newsagent. It's a shamefree environment. One of the reasons I never bought porn before was the sheer mortification involved-I never had the guts to go in and buy a sordid magazine in front of the girl at the checkout. This wasn't the only reason, but it was definitely a factor.

The third great advantage of Net porn is its infinite and remarkable variety, the fact it is so voluptuously and seductively diverse. If you want to find images of Russian girls in diving suits, there they are on the Net; if you want to explore images of Latino girls having threesomes in swimming pools, there is a whole site dedicated to the genre. Whatever you want, whatever you think it possible to sexually conceive-and way beyond-is on the Net. Waiting like a scorpion in your desert boot.

This last reason is the crucial one, to my mind, speaking as a man. The protean nature of the Net is dangerous, at least for men who are reasonably highly sexed (i.e., most men). That is to say: the Net can reveal to you, as it revealed to me, the various kinks in your teemingly sexual male brain-in an exhilarating but perilous way.
